Clueless Crosswords… now in beta 0.2!

Certainly not a major launch, but we’re proud to announce a working-beta release for our latest project: Clueless Crosswords

Some of you may be familiar with “Clueless Crosswords,” also sometimes known as “Code Words”.   But for those who aren’t, it is essentially a regular-old crossword puzzle, but instead of clues for each word, every letter on the board has been substituted with a number, 1 through 26.  Your job is to completely fill in the grid by matching each number to its appropriate letter.  You’re given three letter/number combinations to get you started, and from there you use simple logic and vocabulary skills to fill in the rest.

For now, all puzzles use extremely simple English – no fancy words, no rare words, no “Scrabble words” ofany kind.  Once we expand the site a bit more we’ll have varying levels of difficulty, may will incorporate more varied and obscure vocabulary words.

There’s just over 1,000 puzzles currently loaded into the system for the 0.2 beta – feel free to give it a go!  The gameplay itself is more or less done at this point, what remains to be completed are the usual Puzzle Baron hallmarks, i.e.: user registration, forums, monthly competitions, trophies, records, stats, etc.  You may also notice we’re using a new design for this site – it may or may not be the one we finally end up with, but we’re trying out some new look-and-feel options.

Anyway, that’s the lot of it – please do give our Clueless Crosswords a try, and let us know via email or this blog post what you think!

Happy Solving!

So happy to see the codeless crosswords!! You would have all my

Some way to lock letters (either the given ones or ones you know are correct) would be much appreciated!!

Other than that, I’ve never tired these kinds of puzzles much before (I found you through your logic puzzles) but it seems pretty swell :)

    Great site btw.

Would be better if the puzzle had to include all 26 letters of the alphabet

I agree, i’d also like to see some way to check my answers. Other than that, very fun idea, well presented! Thank you for the fun.

Hi, I really enjoyed that. A visible reference number for each puzzle and a way to look up by reference number would be great, so I can antagonise / compete with friends on FB. Maybe a timer, too….. it’s all just for bragging rights though – until I get beaten by someone. They I’ll be less up for the competition :)

    Great fun thank you.

Only thing I’d like would be an indication that I’ve already used a letter. As it stands I can select any letter twice (accidentally) and the puzzle lets me do it.

I like it. Just one thing…the emblem on the Baron’s arm makes him look like an American county sheriff (7-sided stars are frequently used for that office).

    Baron von Billy Bob Tucker?

Try giving him a wing insignia from the First World War – doesn’t have to be a specific one, a stylized version will do ;-)

A “i give up” solution button would be nice.
The given letters should already be in place, entering them takes a second, but would be nice if they were already assigned in the key.
not being able to enter the same letter twice would be great.
ability to use arrow keys to move between letters instead of clicking on each new square would be fantastic.

otherwise, love the simplicity and ease of play

Great puzzle nicely implemented. Some puzzles have more than one solution, though – some letters are only used once and more than one letter gives valid words. Also, you say there are no abbreviations, but you’ve used “ads” (advertisements), “flu” (influenza) and “ref” (referee). Did you mean acronyms?

What a blast! I ditto Frank Smart’s request to have an “already used” letter list. Also, I’ve noticed contrary to the instructions, some basic abbreviations are used (MRS, APT). I actually think the occasional simple abbreviation makes it fun, but the instructions should be changed. Great job!

  13. A tip/help system that gives you a letter you’re stuck on would be awesome. Also, at the end of the puzzle you’re told how right or wrong you were.

    Love it!

Found out about your site through the cryptograms app. I love your puzzles, I just wish more of your puzzles were available as apps.
